ANIMAL-ASSISTED

THERAPY

Bringing Comfort to Patients

Portrait of The Starting Place's therapy dog, Tess

Opening yourself up and being vulnerable with a therapist can be difficult. People often bring a lot of emotional baggage that they may have a hard time unpacking. Our certified therapy dog, Tess, brings a lot of comfort to our patients.

Animals make it easier to open up by providing a sense of calm, comfort, and security. This is important for your journey to healing because when you feel more comfortable, you will get a lot more out of your sessions.

Animals can also divert your attention away from the stressful situation. When you’re talking about something difficult, and the tears start to well up, you can turn to Tess and feel that unconditional love that dogs bring us.

We’ve found that animal-assisted therapy helps facilitate better communication for many people, and clients even look forward to therapy. Tess is quite popular among our clients, and even some of our younger clients will pop in the office just to say hello.
